James Haffner is a Professor of Opera at the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music in Stockton, CA. His primary research topic is how the Michael Chekhov technique is used in the training of singer-actors.
As a teacher and scholar of the technique, James’ article “Musical Synthesis of the Michael Chekhov Technique” was published in the International Association of Theatre Critics journal, Critical Stages. His first interaction with the technique was in graduate school at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
The simplicity of the Chekhov tenets immediately transformed his directing both in opera and spoken theatre; today, the technique is a major part of his work both in the rehearsal hall and the classroom.
